The lower Mississippi River has a natural levee made out of the river's sediment. In fact, this levee has gotten so high that the water from nearby areas cannot drain into the river. In order to drain the water, another stream was formed next to the Mississippi River. This nearby river - called the Yazoo River - goes for 175 miles before it allows water to enter the Mississippi River.
